CURRENT PROJECTS

BRISTOL BAY - Naknek, Alaska

More about this project >>>

Our objective is to explore the processes involved in taking the waste from the 200,000,000 lbs of Sockeye Salmon processed at Naknek in Bristol Bay and determine a way to extract the oil from the waste and find a usable product.

We intend to explore uses of Renewable Energy suchas Solar Thermal to assist in the process, as well as use concepts such as Co-generation to make the processes operate at a maximum efficiency. This will include an Energy Audit of the current disposal methods and one of the process we develop.

Alaskan Natives when harvesting fish have traditionally found ways to utilize the whole fish. Fish oil has become a missing staple that before had been a way of life for most, preserving the food to bring them through the long winter. With over 200,000,000 pounds of Sockeye Salmon processed each year in Bristol Bay, they are filleted and canned, the remaining caresses and heads are thrown away which would have been further used in traditional fisheries and still can.

Our objective is to instill these values in the processing of fish and utilize the whole fish thusbringing traditional values back into commercial fish processing. The very nature of creating a new process will likely create jobs and stimulate the economy. This process we develop will be scalable and applicable to other fishing areas, in villages, cities, towns, or even on the fishing grounds (with modifications). The nature of large scale commercial processing is one of efficiency; we expect to improve this by incorporating Renewable Energies, co-generation of heat to assist in processes, infrastructure improvements, and a process to use the portion of the fish that is currently wasted and dumped overboard and turn it into a usable product. We will explore how to extract the oil from the waste in an efficient manner. We will also explore usable products, from FishOil Biodiesel to nutritional supplements as Preventative Care for Native Communities in Alaska. As we have already partnered with the Bristol Bay Planning Commission, TlingitHaida Central Council, and AlaskaSmart Eco-Fuels we expect to determine the feasibility of aprocess to utilize fish waste to benefit Native and at-need families in Alaska. By finding a usable product for fish waste, we expect a concerned party, whether a newcompany, a Borough, a Tribal Government, or and existing company to implement our ideas inthe industry. Our findings will build upon an already growing body of work, and we expect to have a process that can be used in perpetuity along side the fishery. This process, though specific to Bristol Bay, will be duplicable in other fishing communitiesthroughout Alaska. Each area has it unique and specific qualities, but we expect that throughexample and publishing of our results, any entity interested will be able to apply our findings to their situation.

PREVIOUS PROJECTS

EARTHRACE - Auckland, New Zealand and Worldwide

Earthrace is a 78 foot biodiesel powered wave-pierceing trimaran, part of a project to break the world record for circumnaviagiting the globe in a powerboat—and to do so using only renewable fuels. Independent Biofuels provided Marine Engineering during the first attempt, and logistical support during the second, record-breaking journey. We are honored to have served in this historic event!
